Obituary for James A. Guthrie

James Russell Guthrie, born 4/23/1927, passed peacefully from this life on Thursday, 10/20/2016. He is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Delores Ross Guthrie, daughters, Marilyn Smith (Walter), Alicia Garcia (Ralph) and Denise Warren (Frank) and 11 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by daughters Kelly and Kimberly, and grandson Logan Guthrie Smith. Russell sacrificed for his family and left a legacy of love. He grew up on his parents' farm, leaving school for a period each year to tend the fields for his parents. Joining the Merchant Marines at 17, he traveled the world during WWII, assisting our soldiers. He was proud of his service and recently completed a book about those years. At 20, he returned to his home in Live Oak, Florida, and married the woman he would always adore, Delores Ross. On the last day of his life, he spent the day with his grandson, Mason Smith, and they enjoyed themselves immensely. After returning home, Russell lay down to take a nap. The last words spoken between him and Delores a few minutes before he passed, were I love you, and a kiss. His loss is made more bearable by the many beautiful memories he left those he loved. The family requests no flowers and asks friends to please phone before home visits. Russell's funeral is Thursday, November 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Adams & Jennings Funeral Home. He will be interred privately at the National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL
