Obituary for Agnes Nhi Phung Nguyen

(nee Nhi Thi Phung) died peacefully after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s, surrounded by family on Thursday in Brandon, FL. She was born in Quang Tri, Vietnam to Dung Phung and Quat Thi Bui, the third of seven children. One hundred and fifty meters outside the backdoor of her childhood home lived her future husband, Hoa The Nguyen. He cannot ever remember not loving her, and his dream of spending forever with her was realized on their wedding day: January 7, 1954. They proceeded to have 8 children: 7 girls and 1 boy. On April 30, 1975, they uprooted their family, determined to ensure a better and safer future for their children away from war-torn Vietnam. After an arduous journey across the Pacific Ocean, St. Margaret’s Catholic Church in Bel Air, Maryland sponsored the family from a refugee camp. The Church was instrumental in helping the family get situated in America. As the family matriarch, Nhi worked tirelessly to ensure her family’s success in their new home. Her children have all married and had children of their own. Her passion was being with family, taking care of her 22 grandchildren, and paying it forward by fostering many young adults from Vietnam. Later in her life, her disease progressed and she needed 24/7 care. She lived at the Brandon Health & Rehabilitation Center for the past five years. Her “Notebook” husband still came every day to help care for her, feed her, and talk to her even when she couldn’t respond anymore. The family thanks all the staff for their love and excellent care—a special recognition to Dr. Byrnes, Lela, and Jessica for going above and beyond their call of duty. She is survived by Hoa, her devoted husband of 61 years, loving children Hong (Hao), Mai (Thai), Phuong (Anphong), Van (Khong), Trang (Kevin), Huong (Thong), Hung (Lan), and Tram (Sal Sr), dedicated grandchildren Binh (Marcus), Bi (Taylor), An, Linh, Lily (Jason), Giang (Nicole), Chau, Mai-Ly, AnDy, Dan, Aidan, Cammy, Mylan, Quang, Rebecca, Ryan, Vinh, Ai-Linh, Ai-Ly, Sal Jr, and Samantha, and cherished great-grandchildren Natalie, Andrew, Sophia, Ava, and Nathan. She is also survived by siblings Thach, Ba, Phuc, Trong, and Duyet. She’ll be greeted in heaven by her parents, brother Sanh, and granddaughter Ai-Vy. The family will receive friends in both Florida and Maryland. A viewing will be held at Adams & Jennings Funeral Home (6900 North Nebraska Avenue, Tampa, FL 33604) on Monday, July 27 from 7PM-9PM with a vigil beginning at 7:30PM. Viewings will be held Thursday, July 30th and Friday, July 31st from 6PM-9PM at Duda-Ruck Funeral Home of Dundalk (7922 Wise Avenue, Dundalk, MD 21222). A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Saturday, August 1 at 9AM at Our Lady of LaVang Catholic Church (335 Sollers Point Road, Dundalk, MD 21222). Internment at St. Stanislaus Cemetery (6515 Boston Street, Baltimore, MD 21224) will immediately follow Mass.
